Customer success plan template
A customer success plan states what a customer wants from your product or service, how both sides will measure it and who meets when. Fill the form and the template fills itself; copy it or download it.
How to use it
- Fill the form. Enter the customer's name, the business goal they bought you for, the metric that will prove it and how often you will review it.
- Replace the placeholders. Read the filled template. Replace the bracketed placeholders with real names, baselines and dates.
- Add stakeholders. Add every stakeholder who can judge the result, with how often you meet them.
- Share and review. Copy the plan into your shared document or download the Markdown file, then review it at the cadence you set.
What is a customer success plan?
A customer success plan is a short document written in the first weeks of a customer relationship. It records the outcome the customer is paying for, the metric that will show it and the people on both sides. It also covers the milestones to get there, the known risks and how often the two sides will meet. The customer success manager or account manager owns it and the customer reads it.
The six sections
- Goals: the business outcome in the customer's words, one to three of them.
- Success metrics: for each goal, the metric, its baseline today, the target and the date.
- Stakeholders: who on each side cares about the result, their role and how often you meet.
- Milestones: the steps to the first result, each with an owner and a date.
- Risks and open questions: what could stop the result and who owes an answer.
- Review cadence: the regular check-in and the quarterly review.
Customer success plan and account plan
A customer success plan is about one customer's outcome and is shared with them. An account plan is your internal view of the account: value, stakeholders, whitespace and risks. Keep both if you need both; the plan here is the one the customer reads. The quarterly review of either uses the QBR template.

What is a customer success plan?
A short, shared document that records the outcome a customer wants, the metric that proves it, the stakeholders, the milestones, the risks and the review cadence.
How do you create a customer success plan?
Start from the customer's own words about why they bought. Turn that into one measurable goal, agree on the metric and its baseline, list the people and the milestones, name the risks and set the cadence. The form above walks through those steps.
Can you show a customer success plan example?
The filled template above is one. Enter a name and a goal and the sections fill with the structure a real plan uses: goal, metric with baseline and target, stakeholders, milestones, risks and cadence.
What is the difference between a customer success plan and an account plan?
The success plan is shared with the customer and is about their outcome. The account plan is internal and is about the account's value, stakeholders and expansion. This site has a template for each.
How often should the plan be reviewed?
Check the metric at every regular meeting and review the whole plan each quarter, usually in the QBR.
Is there an Excel version?
The plan is a document, so the download is Markdown, which pastes into Word, Google Docs and Notion. The milestones table can be copied into Excel or Sheets as it is.
The plan is the easy part
Keeping every promise in it is the hard part. Sektra tracks commitments, open questions and silence for every customer, from the threads you already have.
